Genesis 22 brings Abraham to the greatest test of his faith, but the test is not because God needs to discover what Abraham will do. God already knows. The testing allows Abraham to experience and demonstrate the faith God has been developing in him. When commanded to offer Isaac, the son he loves and the son of God's promise, Abraham obeys even though he cannot understand how God's command and God's promise fit together. On Mount Moriah, Abraham learns that faith does not require understanding everything God is doing; it requires trusting the God who does. When God provides a ram in Isaac's place, Abraham experiences the LORD as the God who provides. Genesis 22 ultimately points us to Jesus Christ, the beloved Son whom God Himself would provide as our sacrifice. Through Abraham's testing, we learn that trials do not teach God something He does not know. They reveal to us what faith looks like, strengthen our trust, and teach us more about the God in whom we have placed our faith.
